  12. This Technical Note describes the contents of the disks System.Disk and 
  13. System.Tools and the minimum files necessary to boot GS/OS starting with 
  14. System Software 5.0.
  15. Changes since November 1989:  Updated to reflect System Software version 
  16. 5.0.3.

  19. This Note gives a description of each of the files in the Apple IIgs System 
  20. Software 5.0.3 package.  This package includes three disks:  System.Disk, 
  21. System.Tools, and the Apple II Setup disk for AppleShare 2.1.3 (Macintosh 
  22. format).  System.Disk is bootable and includes two block drivers with 5.0.3.  
  23. System.Tools is not bootable, but with 5.0.3 it includes other drivers, 
  24. AppleTalk files, the Shaston 16 font and some utility programs.  The Apple II 
  25. Setup disk is an update for AppleShare File Servers (version 2.01 or later) 
  26. which allows them to boot into GS/OS.  Since the software on this disk is not 
  27. available for licensing and does not ship with applications, this Note does 
  28. not cover its contents.

  30. Although System Software 5.0.3 may function in 512K (768K to use AppleShare or 
  31. the SCSI Manager), Apple has not tested it in systems with less than 1 Mb or 
  32. memory.

  34. Because of the quantity of changes between System Software 5.0.2 and 5.0.3, 
  35. the changes to 5.0.3 are not detailed in this Note; however, files that 
  36. changed between 5.0.2 and 5.0.3 are marked with an asterisk (*).

  39. Contents of System.Disk
  40.  
  41. ProDOS                      Every file system boots differently; the 
  42.                             boot blocks for ProDOS disks look for a 
  43.                             file name ProDOS.  This is that file.  It 
  44.                             is the GS/OS file system stub necessary to 
  45.                             start the boot process.
  46. System                      The directory containing most of the GS/OS files.
  47.     CDevs                   The directory containing all Apple IIgs 
  48.                             Control Panel Devices (CDevs) required 
  49.                             for minimal operation.
  50.         Alphabet            Sets translation specifications and 
  51.                             display languages.
  52.         DirectConnect       Allows selection of direct-connected printers.
  53.         General             Allows setting of general system parameters.
  54.         Keyboard            Sets keyboard parameters.
  55.         Modem               Controls modem port settings.
  56.         Monitor             Sets 40-column or 80-column mode, 
  57.                             monochrome or color mode, and the color of 
  58.                             text, text background, and borders.
  59.         Mouse               Sets mouse parameters.
  60.         Printer             Controls printer port settings.
  61.         RAM                 Controls the size of the RAM disk and the 
  62.                             GS/OS Disk Cache.
  63.         Slots               Allows selection of slot settings and 
  64.                             startup slot.
  65.         Sound               Sets user preference for sound pitch and volume.
  66.         Time                Sets the internal clock's time and display format.
  67.         CDev.Data           A list of internal Control Panel 
  68.                             parameters for each CDev in the directory; 
  69.                             the list is precalculated for speed when 
  70.                             opening the Control Panel.
  71.     Desk.Accs               The directory containing all the classic and new 
  72.                             desk accessory files to be loaded at boot time.
  73.         CtlPanel.NDA        The new desk accessory which allows users 
  74.                             to control almost all system parameters 
  75.                             and choose printers and file servers.
  76.     Drivers                 The directory containing all device 
  77.                             drivers needed by GS/OS and the Toolbox 
  78.                             (including the Print Manager and MIDI Tools).
  79.         AppleDisk3.5        The Apple 3.5 Drive device driver for GS/OS.
  80.         AppleDisk5.25       The driver for Apple 5.25" disk drives, 
  81.                             including Disk II drives and Apple UniDisk 
  82.                             5.25 drives.  This driver is required for 
  83.                             GS/OS to recognize 5.25" disk drives.
  84.         Console.Driver*     The text screen and keyboard device driver 
  85.                             for GS/OS.
  86.         ImageWriter*        The ImageWriter driver for the Print Manager.
  87.         Printer*            The printer port driver for the Print Manager.
  88.         Modem*              The modem port driver for the Print Manager.
  89.         Printer.Setup       A file containing the default printer driver 
  90.                             and port driver settings for the Print Manager.
  91.     Error.Msg*              A compiled file containing all error 
  92.                             messages required by GS/OS.  This file is 
  93.                             separate from the GS.OS file to provide 
  94.                             easier support for localization.
  95.     ExpressLoad*            New routines for GS/OS which load 
  96.                             specially processed files up to four times 
  97.                             faster than previously possible prior to 
  98.                             System Software 5.0.  GS/OS loads 
  99.                             ExpressLoad at boot time on systems with 
  100.                             more than 512K total memory.
  101.     Fonts                   The directory containing all system fonts 
  102.                             to be used.
  103.         Courier.10          10-point Courier font.
  104.         Courier.12          12-point Courier font.
  105.         FastFont            This makes Shaston 8 text drawing much 
  106.                             faster on systems with more than 512K of RAM.
  107.         Geneva.10           10-point Geneva font.
  108.         Geneva.12           12-point Geneva font.
  109.         Helvetica.10        10-point Helvetica font.
  110.         Helvetica.12        12-point Helvetica font.
  111.         Shaston.16          16-point Shaston font.
  112.         Times.10            10-point Times font.
  113.         Times.12            12-point Times font.
  114.         Venice.14           14-point Venice font.
  115.         Font.Lists          A file prepared by the Font Manager when 
  116.                             FMStartUp is first called.  It contains 
  117.                             information about all the fonts in the 
  118.                             Fonts directory and is only recalculated 
  119.                             if the Font Manager reasonably believes 
  120.                             the information has changed.
  121.     FSTs                    The directory containing the file system 
  122.                             translators to be loaded at boot time.
  123.         Char.FST*           The character device FST.
  124.         Pro.FST*            The ProDOS FST.
  125.     GS.OS*                  The remainder of GS/OS.
  126.     GS.OS.Dev*              The GS/OS Device Manager and associated core 
  127.                             routines.  Separate from GS.OS for speed reasons.
  128.     P8*                     The ProDOS 8 operating system, version 1.9.
  129.     Start                   The boot program.  If this file exists, 
  130.                             GS/OS always launches it upon boot.  In 
  131.                             this case, as in most cases, this is the 
  132.                             Finder.  The Finder for System Software 
  133.                             5.0 is V1.3.
  134.     Start.GS.OS*            The file containing the GLoader and 
  135.                             GQuit routines.  It loads the files GS.OS 
  136.                             and GS.OS.Dev, which contain the rest of 
  137.                             the operating system.
  138.     System.Setup            The directory containing all the 
  139.                             initialization files to be executed at boot time.
  140.         CDev.Init           A file, required for the Control Panel new 
  141.                             desk accessory, which executes any 
  142.                             initialization code in any CDev that is in 
  143.                             the CDev subdirectory.
  144.         Resource.Mgr*       The Resource Manager, V1.1.  This is an 
  145.                             initialization file since the design of 
  146.                             the Resource Manager requires it to be 
  147.                             present even when an application has not 
  148.                             specifically loaded it.  If this file is 
  149.                             not present, the system does not boot.
  150.         Sys.Resources       A file containing system resources used by 
  151.                             the tools and the Control Panel, and which 
  152.                             are available to applications.
  153.         Tool.Setup          A required file that loads files which 
  154.                             contain all the patches to tools in ROM 
  155.                             for ROM levels 01 (TS2) and 03 (TS3).  
  156.                             Tool.Setup would attempt to load TS1 if 
  157.                             executed on a machine with ROM level 00, 
  158.                             but GS/OS does not boot on such a machine, 
  159.                             therefore, TS1 is not included.
  160.         TS2*                All the patches to ROM tools for ROM level 01.
  161.         TS3*                All the patches to ROM tools for ROM level 03.
  162.     Tools                   The directory containing tool files for 
  163.                             all tools not in ROM.
  164.         Tool014*            Window Manager V3.2.
  165.         Tool015*            Menu Manager V3.2.
  166.         Tool016*            Control Manager V3.2.
  167.         Tool018*            QuickDraw Auxiliary V3.2.
  168.         Tool019             Print Manager V3.0.
  169.         Tool020*            LineEdit V3.2.
  170.         Tool021*            Dialog Manager V3.3.
  171.         Tool022             Scrap Manager V3.0.
  172.         Tool023*            Standard File V3.2.
  173.         Tool025             Note Synthesizer V1.4.
  174.         Tool026             Note Sequencer V1.4.
  175.         Tool027*            Font Manager V3.2.
  176.         Tool028*            List Manager V3.2.
  177.         Tool034*            TextEdit V1.2.
  178. Finder.Def                  Finder default settings file.  This file 
  179.                             must be present on the backup copy of 
  180.                             System.Disk used with the Installer.  The 
  181.                             Installer cannot install GS/OS if this 
  182.                             file is not present on System.Disk.
  183. Icons                       The directory containing all the Finder's 
  184.                             icon files.
  185.     Finder.Icons            The core set of icons used by the 
  186.                             Finder for all system files and devices.
  187.     Finder.Icons.X          The additional icons used by the Finder on 
  188.                             systems with more than 512K total total memory.
  189.     FType.Main*             The file type names used by the Finder on 
  190.                             all systems.
  191.     FType.Aux*              The additional file type names used by the Finder 
  192.                             on systems with more than 512K total memory.
  193. AppleTalk                   A directory containing files to implement 
  194.                             the AppleTalk networking protocols.  On 
  195.                             this disk, this folder is empty.
  196. BASIC.System*               The ProDOS 8 BASIC command interpreter, V1.4.1.
  197. BASIC.Launcher              A short program which allows BASIC.System 
  198.                             to run AppleSoft program files which are 
  199.                             opened from the Finder.
  200. Tutorial                    A directory containing several "empty" 
  201.                             files and other directories, used in user-
  202.                             level documentation to teach the concepts 
  203.                             of a hierarchical file system.  These 
  204.                             files are absolutely unnecessary to the 
  205.                             operation of the System Software.

  265.     Drivers                 Directory with additional device drivers 
  266.                             for GS/OS and the Toolbox.
  267.         Apple.Midi          The Apple MIDI Interface driver for the 
  268.                             MIDI Tools.
  269.         AppleDisk5.25       The driver for Apple 5.25" disk drives, 
  270.                             including Disk II drives and Apple UniDisk 
  271.                             5.25 drives.  This driver is required for 
  272.                             GS/OS to recognize 5.25" disk drives.
  273.         AppleTalk           The AppleTalk port driver for the Print 
  274.                             Manager.  It works with either serial port 
  275.                             when configured for AppleTalk.
  276.         AT.IW.PSetup        This file contains the same information as 
  277.                             the file Printer.Setup for an ImageWriter 
  278.                             printing through AppleTalk.  The Installer 
  279.                             replaces the file Printer.Setup on the 
  280.                             destination disk with this file and 
  281.                             renames it Printer.Setup.
  282.         AT.IWLQ.PSetup      This file contains the same information as 
  283.                             the file Printer.Setup for an ImageWriter 
  284.                             LQ printing through AppleTalk.  The 
  285.                             Installer replaces the file Printer.Setup 
  286.                             on the destination disk with this file and 
  287.                             renames it Printer.Setup.
  288.         ATalk*              The main AppleTalk GS/OS driver.
  289.         ATP1.ATROM          AppleTalk protocols to patch the IIgs ROM.
  290.         ATP2.ATRAM*         AppleTalk protocols not in ROM.
  291.         Card6850.MIDI       The driver for 6850-based MIDI interface 
  292.                             cards for the MIDI Tools.
  293.         DeskJet.plus        The Hewlett-Packard(R) DeskJet(TM) Plus driver 
  294.                             for the Print Manager.
  295.         Epson               The Epson(R) printer driver for the Print Manager.
  296.         EPSON.PSetup        This file contains the same information as 
  297.                             the file Printer.Setup for an Epson 
  298.                             printing through the parallel card driver.  
  299.                             The Installer replaces the file 
  300.                             Printer.Setup on the destination disk with 
  301.                             this file and renames it Printer.Setup.
  302.         ImageWriter*        The ImageWriter driver for the Print Manager.
  303.         ImageWriter.LQ*     The ImageWriter LQ driver for the Print 
  304.                             Manager.  For 5.0.3, this driver is 
  305.                             completely new and uses all the 
  306.                             capabilities of the ImageWriter LQ.
  307.         IW.PSetup           This file contains the same information as 
  308.                             the file Printer.Setup for an ImageWriter 
  309.                             printing through the printer port.  The 
  310.                             Installer replaces the file Printer.Setup 
  311.                             on the destination disk with this file and 
  312.                             renames it Printer.Setup.
  313.         IWEM                PostScript(R) program which allows a LaserWriter 
  314.                             emulate an ImageWriter.  A user can load it into 
  315.                             the LaserWriter with the LaserWriter CDev, and 
  316.                             it is automatically invoked when printing 
  317.                             through the slot associated with AppleTalk.
  318.         IWLQ.PSetup         This file contains the same information as 
  319.                             the file Printer.Setup for an ImageWriter 
  320.                             LQ printing through the printer port.  The 
  321.                             Installer replaces the file Printer.Setup 
  322.                             on the destination disk with this file and 
  323.                             renames it Printer.Setup.
  324.         LaserWriter         The LaserWriter driver for the Print 
  325.                             Manager.  This driver works with any 
  326.                             LaserWriter with PostScript.  It does not 
  327.                             work with the LaserWriter IIsc.
  328.         LW.PSetup           This file contains the same information as 
  329.                             the file Printer.Setup for an LaserWriter 
  330.                             printing through AppleTalk.  The Installer 
  331.                             replaces the file Printer.Setup on the 
  332.                             destination disk with this file and 
  333.                             renames it Printer.Setup.
  334.         Modem*              The modem port driver for the Print Manager.
  335.         Parallel.Card       A driver for some parallel printer 
  336.                             interface cards for the Print Manager.  
  337.                             This driver works with the Apple Parallel 
  338.                             Interface Card, as well as several other 
  339.                             parallel interface cards.
  340.         Printer*            The printer port driver for the Print Manager.
  341.         SCC.Manager         The GS/OS supervisory driver that 
  342.                             arbitrates hardware-level usage of the SCC 
  343.                             in the Apple IIgs.
  344.         SCSI.Manager*       The GS/OS SCSI Manager, the supervisory 
  345.                             driver that arbitrates hardware-level 
  346.                             usage of Apple II SCSI cards.
  347.         SCSICD.Driver*      The GS/OS driver for the AppleCD SC drive.  
  348.                             This driver is required for GS/OS to 
  349.                             recognize CD-ROM drives.
  350.         SCSIHD.Driver*      The GS/OS driver for SCSI hard disks.  
  351.                             This driver is required for GS/OS to 
  352.                             recognize SCSI hard disks.
  353.         UniDisk3.5*         The GS/OS driver for UniDisk 3.5 drives.  
  354.                             This driver is required for proper 
  355.                             operation of UniDisk 3.5 drives.  Using 
  356.                             the UniDisk with GS/OS without this driver 
  357.                             eventually corrupts media.
  358.     FSTs                    Directory with additional File System Translators.
  359.         AppleShare.FST*     The AppleShare FST which allows GS/OS to 
  360.                             access AppleShare file servers.
  361.         HS.FST              The High Sierra FST which allows GS/OS to 
  362.                             access CD-ROM discs formatted in the 
  363.                             international standard High Sierra or ISO 
  364.                             9660 formats.  This FST is read-only; it 
  365.                             only performs read operations.
  366.     System.Setup            Directory with additional 
  367.                             initialization files.
  368.         AppleIIVOC.INIT     An initialization file used by the Apple IIgs 
  369.                             Video Overlay Card tool set.
  370.         ATInit              The AppleTalk initialization file.
  371.         ATResponder         The AppleTalk Responder, used for 
  372.                             AppleTalk network management.
  373.     Tools                   Directory with additional tools.
  374.         Tool029*            ACE Tools V1.2.
  375.         Tool032             MIDI Tools, V1.3.
  376.         Tool033             Video Overlay Card tool set V1.1
  377.     Fonts                   Directory with additional fonts.
  378.         Shaston.16*         16-point Shaston font.
  379.         Times.12*           12-point Times font.
  380. Scripts                     This directory contains all the scripts 
  381.                             for the Installer.  On launch, the Installer 
  382.                             looks in its parent directory for the Scripts 
  383.                             directory and the scripts it contains.
  384.     ACE*                    Script to install the Audio Compression 
  385.                             and Expansion tools.
  386.     ADV.DISK.UTIL           Script to install the Advanced Disk 
  387.                             Utility program.
  388.     APPLE.MIDI              Script to install the Apple MIDI Interface 
  389.                             driver and tool set.
  390.     APPLEDISK5.25           Script to install the 5.25" disk driver for GS/OS.
  391.     APPLESHARE              Script to install AppleShare.
  392.     Aristotle.Patch         Script to install a change to Aristotle 
  393.                             for easier class transition.
  394.     ATIMAGEWRITER           Script to install the ImageWriter printer 
  395.                             driver for the Print Manager, as well as 
  396.                             the files necessary to work with AppleTalk.
  397.     ATIMAGEWRITERLQ         Script to install the ImageWriter LQ 
  398.                             printer driver for the Print Manager, as well

  413.     HP.DeskJet              Script to install the Hewlett-Packard 
  414.                             DeskJet Plus printer driver for the Print 
  415.                             Manager, as well as the files necessary to 
  416.                             connect it to a serial port.
  417.     INST.SYS.MIN            Script to install a minimal GS/OS system 
  418.                             on a given destination volume.
  419.     INST.SYSF.NOFIN*        Script to install a minimal GS/OS system, without 
  420.                             the Finder, on a given destination volume.
  421.     INSTAL.SYS.FILE*        Script to install a GS/OS system, with the 
  422.                             Finder, on a given destination volume.
  423.     LASERWRITER             Script to install the LaserWriter printer driver 
  424.                             for the Print Manager, as well as the files 
  425.                             necessary to work with AppleTalk.
  426.     Local.Net.Boot*         Script to create a 3.5" floppy disk with 
  427.                             the minimum configuration necessary to boot 
  428.                             locally but log onto an AppleShare file server.
  429.     NAMER                   Script to install Namer II and related 
  430.                             AppleTalk files.
  431.     Quick.Logoff            Script to add a quick logoff feature 
  432.                             to AppleShare.
  433.     SCSI.HARD.DISK*         Script to install the SCSI Manager and 
  434.                             SCSI hard disk driver for GS/OS.
  435.     Server.Sys.File*        Script to install System Software 5.0 on 
  436.                             an AppleShare File Server.
  437.     UNIDISK3.5              Script to install the UniDisk 3.5 driver 
  438.                             for GS/OS.
  439.     VIDEOMIX                Script to install the latest versions of 
  440.                             the Apple II VideoMix software and tools.
  441. Installer*                  The Apple IIgs Installer program, version 1.2.  
  442.                             This program makes use of scripts found in the 
  443.                             Scripts directory on this disk to install parts 
  444.                             of the system, as well as third-party 
  445.                             applications, without the user needing to copy 
  446.                             individual files.
  447. AppleTalk                   This directory contains additional 
  448.                             AppleTalk files and utilities for 
  449.                             AppleShare and AppleTalk.
  450.     Boot.Driver             A driver for AppleShare that GS/OS loads 
  451.                             before the other drivers are loaded and 
  452.                             which remains resident in memory after the 
  453.                             boot process is finished.  Installed on 
  454.                             servers by the Installer script Server.Sys.File.
  455.     Display.0
  456.     Namer                   This directory contains the Namer II application 
  457.                             to rename AppleTalk devices.
  458.         MtxAbs.0            MouseText code routines for by Namer II.
  459.         Namer.II            The Namer II application (a ProDOS 8 program).
  460.         Namer.0             Additional code needed by Namer II.
  461.     QuickLogoff             An initialization file used to add a quick 
  462.                             logoff feature to AppleShare.
  463.     Start                   The AppleShare startup program which is 
  464.                             installed in place of the Finder on 
  465.                             AppleShare volumes.  It allows the user to 
  466.                             log on and then launches the server 
  467.                             startup program for the user's machine.
  468. Adv.Disk.Util               The Advanced Disk Utility program which 
  469.                             allows for partitioning of SCSI hard 
  470.                             disks, as well as erasing, initializing, 
  471.                             and zeroing volumes or partitions.

  474. Minimum GS/OS System Disk Requirements
  475.  
  476. The following files are required for GS/OS to boot.  This list does not 
  477. address files needed by the Finder or the IIgs Toolbox.  Those files only 
  478. required in certain circumstances are noted as such.  Those files that may be 
  479. excluded only when disk space or memory limitations make it absolutely 
  480. necessary are marked with asterisks (*).
